Val Demings Goes To Bat For Officer In Ma’Khia Bryant Shooting: ‘It Appears’ He ‘Responded As He Was Trained To Do’

Congresswoman Val Demings (D-FL), the former Police Chief in Orlando, on Sunday said she believed the Ohio officer who fatally shot 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant appeared to have “responded as he was trained to do.”

“When I served as a police chief, what I prayed for daily was that my police officers would respond as they are trained to do. Now, after every incident, we’d have to go back and look at our policies and make sure that the policies met the moment. Look, I worked as a social worker with foster care children so it’s a sad moment for me,” she explained on CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” “But I also was a patrol officer who was out there in the street having to make those split-second decisions.”

The congresswoman pointed to cell phones and video cameras as evidence of a change in reviewing police responses.

“Now everyone has the benefit of slowing the video down and seizing the perfect moment. The officer on the street does not have that ability,” Demings explained. “He or she has to make those split-second decisions and they’re tough, but the limited information that I know and [in] viewing the video, it appears the officer responded as he was trained to do, with the main thought of preventing a tragedy and a loss of life of a person who was about to be assaulted.”

Minutes before the guilty verdict came down in the Derrick Chauvin trial, a video surfaced on social media of a white officer shooting a black teenage girl.

According to WBNS-TV, officers in Columbus, Ohio received a 911 call from a distressed individual saying multiple women were attempting to stab her. Bodycam footage from the incident showed officers arriving to find 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant wielding a knife at two girls, at which point the responding officer stepped in and fired his service weapon as she appeared to be attempting to stab one of the victims.

“She came at her with a knife,” an officer can be heard saying in the video.

Bryant was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead.

The officer was later identified as Nicholas Reardon, who was hired in December of 2019, WOAI-TV reported. Columbus Interim Police Chief Michael Woods indicated Reardon was pulled from street patrol.

As The Daily Wire reported, lefty pundits were quick to claim Reardon’s actions were unjustified. Almost all of those claims failed to take into account that Bryant was wielding a knife at two other teenage girls. Ben Crump, the attorney for the families of George Floyd, Duante Wright, and Trayvon Martin, also perpetuated that narrative.
