Trump’s ‘Revocation Of Visas’ Is Why Midterm Turnout Matters
The Trump administration is planning the largest mass revocation of US visas in history, targeting foreign nationals who come to the US on short-term visas (B1 and B2) from 2016 to 2026, claiming they have sought or are seeking asylum to establish long-term residence. This move aims to close loopholes that have been exploited for fraudulent asylum claims, which cause backlogs and complicate deportation efforts. Officials argue that the system has been overwhelmed by frivolous asylum requests, allowing individuals to build roots and avoid removal. Additionally, Trump has taken measures to tighten birthright citizenship, especially for children of terrorists, embassy workers, and others from foreign countries, and revoked 175,000 visas for individuals with criminal histories. These actions reflect a broader crackdown on both legal and illegal immigration,emphasizing the importance of strict immigration policies for national sovereignty. The Trump administration is planning the “largest single mass revocation of visas in US history,” the Associated Press (AP) reported Monday — a move that should only encourage the base to turn out in the upcoming midterms even if their political wishlist hasn’t otherwise been fulfilled.
State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott told the AP that the State Department is “coordinating with DHS to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of foreigners who have come to the United States claiming to be short-term visitors, but then file for asylum to stay here permanently.”
The State Department reportedly plans to revoke B1 and B2 visas that were issued between 2016 and 2026 from people that sought or are currently seeking asylum. These visas are given for tourists, medical visits and other short term leaves. According to the Associated Press, the revocations “would not necessarily result in their immediate deportation” but would result in the immigrants losing “their status as business or tourism travelers.”
Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said in a post on X that the move would end loopholes in our immigration system that cause backlog and chaos.
“People in the US and all over the world are fed up with bogus asylum claims. Asylum isn’t supposed to be a loophole to circumvent immigration laws; rather, it’s supposed to provide a narrow safe harbor for persons persecuted because of their ‘race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion,’” Landau said.
“But the system has long been swamped by frivolous asylum claims, meaning that it takes years to adjudicate whether applicants are actually entitled to asylum,” he continued. In other words, these bogus asylum claims create a backlog that allows aliens to “put down roots in our country” like having children which complicates the potential future deportation proceeding.
The incentive had been obvious, foreigners get to enter the country on frivolous excuses like travel, medical and other short term visits. While here, they’d establish roots which made their removal politically and practically more difficult. Closing that loophole is actually a significant action for the Trump administration to take. It’s also a reminder that elections have consequences.
Even after the Supreme Court incorrectly read birthplace citizenship into the Constitution, Trump took steps to end the abuse and insult to our sovereignty by passing two new executive orders. One order clarifies that children born to an “alien enemy” (aka terrorists) cannot become citizens by birth. The order also clarifies that children born to ambassadors, embassy works, and other foreign government employees are not entitled to birthplace citizenship, as explained in these pages by Breccan Thies. The second order aims to curb birth tourism industries.
The president has also revoked 175,000 visas for people who have committed crimes, according to Associated Press, while also continuing his efforts on mass deportations.
The crackdown on legal and illegal immigration is a direct result of a Republican president who has a Republican Congress that doesn’t try to use lawfare to jail him or oust him for saving the country. Republicans don’t have to pretend that every promise has been kept, or that things feel amazing. They don’t. We have a war, and prices still feel high. But fair disappointment shouldn’t also stop us from securing victories.
As we head into November, Republicans should remember that everything is downstream of a smart immigration policy. Giving Democrats power to stop Trump’s efforts to crackdown on immigration writ large isn’t proving a point to Trump, it’s sacrificing America’s future. Whatever problems there are with Republicans, there are far more problems with Democrats, and if we want Trump to keep notching immigration victories, we need to give him the arena to do it.
