Cornyn, Tillis Epitomize The GOP’s Hatred For Its Voters

Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., have a lot in common. Both are soon to be unemployed, and both have a serial hatred for the people who elected them to public office.

That disdain has never been more apparent than it has throughout Todd Blanche’s Senate confirmation process to become America’s next attorney general. While originally set to be voted on by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday morning, a representative for Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, announced late Wednesday that a vote on Blanche’s nomination has been postponed for the foreseeable future due to Cornyn and Tillis’ continued stonewalling.

As Grassley’s team indicated, the GOP senators are withholding their support due to alleged concerns about a now-defunct $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund for victims of Democrat lawfare. Tillis has also fearmongered about Blanche weaponizing the Justice Department and even compared the Biden DOJ’s weaponization to the Trump administration’s efforts to achieve accountability for that abuse.

Try as they may to portray themselves as “dignified” statesmen who are taking their jobs seriously, Cornyn and Tillis aren’t fooling anyone.

Following Trump’s return to office, the two senators eagerly attempted to portray themselves as allies of the president because their political careers depended on it. But since Tillis decided to forgo reelection and Cornyn lost his primary, the two sore losers are perfectly comfortable publicly sabotaging the president and his voters’ policy agenda. (This is also applicable to Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., who lost his reelection bid earlier this year.)

Such two-faced behavior isn’t a new phenomenon. If anything, it’s indicative of how most elected Republicans who hate their voters operate.

Republicans learned long ago that they don’t actually have to agree with or like their voters. They realized that if they do the bare minimum — confirming Trump nominees, repeating MAGA talking points, talking about how bad Democrats are, etc. — they could maintain their grip on power.

It’s only now that they’re on their way out the Senate door that Cornyn and Tillis are OK with letting the public in on who they (and many of their Republican colleagues) really are.

If there were any doubts about the validity of this intra-GOP dynamic, take it from Cornyn himself. In response to Trump’s suggestion that he’d temporarily pull Blanche’s AG nomination until after Cornyn and Tillis leave office, the Texas senator stupidly admitted that several of his fellow senators are basically hiding behind him and Tillis while they oppose the president behind the scenes.

The Senate GOP’s refusal to pass the SAVE America Act is another great example of this.

Acquiring a Republican Party that actually believes in the issues their voters care about and will fight for them on the policy battles that matter when they matter is not something that can be accomplished overnight. It’s an endeavor that’s going to take multiple primary cycles — one that will require dedication from the Republican base (and better endorsements from leaders like Trump).

Self-governance does not mean casting a ballot, going home, and expecting politicians to “do the right thing” until the next election. It’s a lifelong commitment that demands the American people be active citizens in their government. And until the GOP base recognizes that and consistently acts on it, there will always be more John Cornyns and Thom Tillises ready to cause trouble.
