The George Washington is the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier and typically operates in the western Pacific Ocean. It is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carrier that can accommodate over 6,000 service members.

The vessel and its strike group are transiting the Arabian Sea, heading toward the Gulf of Oman as part of “a scheduled deployment after arriving in the CENTCOM theater,” the agency said on Thursday.
Now that the George Washington has made it to the region, the sailors aboard the Abraham Lincoln may now return home. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said the Abraham Lincoln “crushed their deployment and will return home soon as part of a planned rotation” last week. It could take up to a month for the vessel to arrive back in the United States.
Reports have emerged of dire conditions aboard the ship, as families of service members on the Abraham Lincoln plead for help. The ship has set a modern Navy record for the longest uninterrupted time at sea without a port visit, as it was supposed to return home in June. The deployment was extended as the Iran war continued.
The George Washington will be taking over the Abraham Lincoln’s role in guarding the Strait of Hormuz, an initiative by the Trump administration to stop Iran from exporting its oil. U.S. forces also escort ships moving through the waterway.

With the George Washington in the Middle East, there is a significant gap in force presence near China. The George Washington strike group could be a temporary presence in the Middle East, filling a gap until the USS Theodore Roosevelt, currently stationed in San Diego, can head for the region.
