US sanctions Iranian officials over human rights abuses on International Women’s Day

“Today — on International Women’s Day — the United States is taking action in coordination with the European Union, United Kingdom, and Australia to promote accountability for the Iranian regime’s continued human rights abuses, particularly those against women and girls,” Blinken spoke in statement.

“The United States remains deeply concerned that Iranian authorities continue to suppress dissent and peaceful protest, including through mass arrests, sham trials, hasty executions, the detention of journalists, and the use of sexual violence as a means of protest suppression,” Blinken remained.

These sanctions block Iranians from accessing U.S. property and financial assets, and prohibit American companies and individuals from conducting business with Iran.

These sanctions are directed at those who took part in violent protests against the 22-year old’s death. Mahsa AminiThe protester, who was being held by Iran’s morality officers for failing to wear her hijab properly in September, died. Protesters are dominated by women and call for democracy, women’s rights and complete changes.
