US Border Patrol Agents Shot at While Catching Migrants
US Border Patrol Agents Come Under Gunfire While Apprehending Migrants
Border agents in Texas had a close call on Thursday when they were shot at from Mexico while apprehending a group of migrants, according to Border Report.
Fortunately, no one was injured or hit by any bullets, as reported by Border Report. It is also believed that no one was apprehended in Mexico in connection with the incident.
“As the group was being apprehended, agents noticed a subject south of the border barrier a handgun and fire towards the agents,” Border Patrol said in a statement.
“The agents immediately took cover and secured the migrants.”
This incident is just one of many that highlight the dangers faced by Border Patrol agents. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, there have been 271 assaults on agents between October and June, 421 in the entire fiscal year 2022, and 361 in fiscal year 2021.
The FBI El Paso Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge Douglas Goodwater emphasized the seriousness of these assaults, stating, “Assaults on Border Patrol agents or any other law enforcement officer from any side of the border will not be tolerated and will be investigated swiftly by our office so they can continue to carry out their sworn duty to protect our community and nation,” as reported by Border Report.
In a separate incident, Texas authorities recently arrested two armed individuals believed to be members of a cartel at the southern border, according to Fox News. The Texas Department of Public Safety expressed their concern, stating, “There is no greater public safety and national security threat than the Mexican drug cartels, who have exploited security vulnerabilities due to an unsecured international border.”
Collaboration between local, county, state, and federal agencies is crucial in addressing these threats and ensuring the safety of the state and the country.
Requests for comment from CBP and the FBI have gone unanswered.
