US and China reportedly set to have AI talks in September
The United States and China are set to hold talks in September regarding artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the risks associated with advanced frontier models and the ongoing competition for AI dominance. While the exact dates are not finalized, the meeting is expected before Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the U.S. on September 24, marking the first AI-related dialogue under the Trump management. Previously, President Donald Trump and xi Jinping discussed AI regulation at a summit in May, agreeing to initiate intergovernmental talks on AI governance.
The upcoming discussions aim to establish basic agreements, such as defining frontier AI models, though substantive solutions are unlikely. U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott bessent, are expected to lead the talks. Both nations are also working to develop AI regulations and strengthen security measures amid the global race to develop powerful AI technologies. Recent efforts include U.S. actions to restrict Chinese AI models like Kimi K3 and discussions among Congress and the trump administration on voluntary safety standards for new AI releases, with potential restrictions on American companies using Chinese models.

President Donald Trump and Xi previously discussed AI regulation at a summit in May, where they agreed to launch intergovernmental talks on AI governance.
“This is the first meeting, they’re unlikely to solve any major problems. I think they will try to agree to some basic terms, like what defines a frontier AI model,” DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group partner Paul Triolo told Reuters.
The discussion would be led on the U.S. side by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, four of the sources said. Other details about the meeting were not yet reported.
The White House and U.S. Treasury did not respond to a Washington Examiner request for comment.
The AI race and security guardrails
As Beijing and Washington race to develop AI, both superpowers are working to establish regulations and shore up national security vulnerabilities.
The Trump administration, for instance, recently pressured Anthropic to disable access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models worldwide in response to a hacking incident linked to China.
Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment.
