‘Under Doctor’s Orders’: Billy Joel Postpones Concert Due To Illness

Billy Joel postponed his final concert of 2022, a sold-out show at New York City’s Madison Square Garden scheduled for Monday night due to “doctor’s orders.”

The 73-year-old singer shared Sunday on Instagram that “Bill Joel at The Garden” would be rescheduled to June because he needed to recover from an infection.

“I’m disappointed to share that I’m under doctor’s orders for vocal rest due to a viral infection so unfortunately, I must postpone my Monday, December 19th concert at Madison Square Garden to June,” he wrote.

“I’m so sorry to let you know so close to show day, but I was hoping to be closer to a full recovery by now,” he added. “Sadly, that hasn’t happened. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year. – BILLY JOEL.”

On BillyJoel.com, the concert at Madison Square Garden is listed for Friday, June 2, 2023.

Joel’s spokesperson acknowledged “the inconvenience this causes everyone who purchased tickets” and apologized “for this unexpected circumstance.”

However, both the New York Knicks and New York Rangers play home games at Madison Square Garden, and if either make it into the playoffs, that could cause the concert to be moved once again, The Daily Mail noted.

Joel’s residency at the Garden started back in 2014, and tickets to Monday’s show went on sale a while ago. News of the cancellation hits some fans hard after traveling from far away to see the “Only Good Die Young” singer in person perform.

“Noooooooooo! I’ve come from Australia,” wrote one fan. “I’m devastated but totally understand.”

Another wrote, “‘[F]lew from England to see this. [G]et better soon Billy.”
