UNC lockdown ends with tragic news: Faculty member confirmed dead by police.

Armed and Dangerous Suspect Arrested near ⁤UNC Campus

Police at the⁢ University ‌of North Carolina have declared the situation all ⁢clear after an armed and dangerous suspect was apprehended close to campus.

The University‌ of North Carolina, Chapel ‍Hill, was put on high alert Monday afternoon when police issued an alert of an armed ‍and dangerous person on or near the campus. After an hourslong lockdown, police⁤ declared the situation all clear. Police later confirmed ​that one faculty member had been killed.

Resume Normal Activities

“All clear. All ⁢clear. ⁣Resume normal activities,” UNC Police announced on X, the social media outlet formerly known as Twitter.

In a press⁤ conference, UNC leaders and police confirmed the arrest of the suspect, but they did not ⁣disclose how or if the shooter and victim knew each other. They added that ‌classes were canceled for the rest of Monday and Tuesday.

The university’s alert system advised students‍ to avoid Caudill Labs, the ⁤location⁣ of the killing, as confirmed⁤ at the press conference.

Police revealed that a false arrest had been made over the course of the investigation, stating it occurred because a ‍man matched the description of the suspect and was ⁣in the same ⁣area.

Police are still searching ‌for the gun used in the shooting. They were unable to determine whether or not it was legally obtained.

Police‌ released a photo of the suspect,‌ urging students to avoid him⁢ and to call​ 911 if they​ spot him.

A WRAL reporter⁤ said the situation prompted a heavy police response, with over half a ⁢dozen police cars making their way toward the campus.
