The White House‘s attempt to strike a balance in its response to pro-Palestinian protests on various college campuses has some Democrats concerned about the election in November.

Protests on several college campuses, including Columbia University, have caused security and safety concerns for Jewish students. The demonstrators at Columbia have created an encampment and have allegedly harassed and intimidated Jewish students as the protesters decry Israel in its war against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.

On Monday, President Joe Biden offered a qualified condemnation of the protesters who were crossing the line into antisemitism, which included condemning people he claims “don’t understand” what is going on with Palestinians.

“I condemn the antisemitic protests,” Biden said on Monday. “That’s why I have set up a program to deal with that. I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”

Later on Monday, the president offered up a stronger condemnation by saying that “we must speak out against the alarming surge of antisemitism — in our schools, communities, and online.”

“Silence is complicity. Even in recent days, we’ve seen harassment and calls for violence against Jews. This blatant antisemitism is reprehensible and dangerous — and it has absolutely no place on college campuses or anywhere in our country,” Biden said in his lengthy statement regarding the Jewish holiday Passover on Monday evening.

The messaging from Biden ahead of the election has one Democratic consultant worried about the “chaos” it may bring. Dan Sena, a consultant who led the House Democrats’ campaign wing in 2018, told Politico that for Biden’s campaign, younger voters should be a concern.

“Anything that brings chaos to the Democratic brand is detrimental to the Biden campaign,” Sena said. “I’m most concerned about young people and how they view inflation, but the protests also present a challenge.”

Biden has seen lower polling with younger voters than four years ago in his matchup against former President Donald Trump as the president grapples with fractions from the hard Left over the war in Gaza.

The war between Israel and Hamas is in its seventh month. The conflict began after Hamas launched terrorist attacks on Israel on Oct. 7.
