UN says Trump funding cuts harm global ‘gender equality’

The United Nations expressed concern over the global decline in gender equality, attributing this setback to reduced goverment funding. Its recent “Gender Snapshot” report highlights that various UN agencies are experiencing or expect to face weakened efforts in promoting gender equality due to decreased financial support from member governments. The report notes that prior to these funding cuts, the United States was a major supporter of the UN’s initiatives, but this support was substantially reduced during Donald Trump’s presidency, who cut funding over concerns related to the organization’s political positions and security of humanitarian programs.

The United Nations lamented the “declining” state of “gender equality” worldwide in a Thursday report that blamed its loss of government funds for the backslide.

Agencies across the U.N. are reporting “actual or anticipated weakening of their gender equality efforts” among other setbacks stemming from government agencies pulling back taxpayer funds from the international body, according to its new “Gender Snapshot” report. President Donald Trump slashed financial support for numerous U.N. programs over concerns about its political stances and failure to protect humanitarian programs from security threats. Before Trump’s actions, America was repeatedly the U.N.’s largest donor per year.
