Thirteen Ukrainian soldiers refused to surrender an island to a Russian warship and in a final act of defiance told their attackers to “…go f*ck yourself!”

A report of the incident reads “All defenders of the island of Zmiinyi died, but did not surrender. All of them will be names Heroes of Ukraine,” said Ukrainian President Zelensky.

The island the Ukrainian soldiers were defending with their lives was captured by Russian forces after the massacre.

The soldiers were stationed on the small border island of Zmiinyi in the Black Sea. A Russian warship ordered them to surrender. Zmiinyi, translated into English as Snake Island, is located approximately 30 miles off Ukraine’s coast, and has a total land area less than 1/10th of a square mile.

The Russian warship told the Ukrainian defenders via radio, “This is a Russian military ship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and unnecessary victims. Otherwise we will open fire on you.”

The border defenders replied, “Russian warship, go f*ck yourself!”

The Russian warship then reportedly opened fire on the island and killed all 13 soldiers.

A recording of the exchange was posted to social media and quickly went viral.

Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed the story in a statement and said he will honor the soldiers posthumously with the “Hero of Ukraine” award for their bravery. “All the defenders of the island of Zmiinyi died but did not surrender.”

According to Zelensky, at least 137 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed so far after Russia invaded Ukraine. An additional 316 wounded.

“May the memory of those who gave their lives for Ukraine live forever,” Zelensky added.
