Ukraine says Starlink throttling hampers defense against Russia
Ukrainian officials reported that restrictions were suddenly placed on military-grade Starlink terminals, particularly on SpaceX’s Starshield service, which disrupted military operations and led to the cancellation of some drone missions. These limitations targeted terminals moving faster than 100 mph and are controlled by the U.S. Department of Defense. The restrictions were implemented without prior warning, affecting Ukraine’s military communications and drone activities.
Ukrainian officials said speed limits were imposed on military-grade Starlink terminals without warning, disrupting military missions and forcing the cancellation of some drone operations.
Serhii Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on defense technology, said the restrictions apply to Starshield, SpaceX’s military service, and limit terminals moving at speeds above 100 mph. Starshield satellites feature enhanced encryption and advanced security features, and are owned and controlled by the U.S. Department of War.
