Two-Thirds Favor Border Wall, E-Verify to Slow Illegal Immigration

Sizable majorities of 2022 midterm election voters are growing more concerned about illegal immigration across the U.S.-Mexico border and believe the fix should include walls, fences, and other barriers and an E-Verify system that would punish employers who hire illegal immigrants.

In a new Rasmussen Reports survey done with the hard-line immigration reform group NumbersUSA, 67% backed a wall and other barriers, including 49% of Democrats.

Even more, 69%, want to “mandate that all employers use the federal electronic E-Verify system to help ensure that they hire only legal workers for U.S. jobs,” read the analysis.

Overall, 60% said that the border crisis is a top issue, and most faulted President Joe Biden for the growing disaster.

“This polling is remarkable. It shows clearly that most American voters of every type, party, and ideology agree that immigration needs to be brought under much better control,” said NumbersUSA Vice President of Operations Jim Robb.

Under Biden, illegal immigration has hit record levels, and Republicans have hammered Democrats on the issue during the midterm elections. However, voters showed that they are not singularly focused, and the promised red wave of GOP victories has evaporated. Just 15% said the border crisis was their sole reason for voting for a candidate last month.

After taking office, Biden stopped the construction of a border wall funded by the Trump administration, and he has moved to dismantle policies to tighten border controls. What’s more, the administration is about to end COVID-era deportation policies, and that is expected to result in even more crossing into the United States.

On related issues, the survey found:

  • By a 2-to-1 margin, voters favor ending so-called “chain migration.” Only 30% favor current U.S. immigration policy, which allows documented immigrants to bring in not just their spouse and children, but also eventually other adult relatives, including extended family members and their spouses’ families. Sixty percent of midterm voters are opposed to current policy and think documented immigrants should be able to bring only their spouse and children with them.
  • Two-thirds of midterm voters favor reducing legal immigration, which has averaged around a million annually in recent years.
  • Voters are split over granting amnesty for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. Some 48% oppose it, while 45% support giving lifetime work permits to the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.
