Two law enforcement officers were fatally shot during a shootout in upstate New York

An Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Syracuse police officer were fired upon while responding to a report of a stolen vehicle in the Syracuse suburb of Salina, multiple outlets reported.

Mousa Alzokari, a resident in the area who lives across the street from the house where the police officers were killed, said he heard about 20 shots fired around 8:45 p.m., according to Syracuse.com. He called the police shortly after that.

Police officers arriving on the scene claimed they heard a “racking” sound coming from a house and also saw AR-style magazines in the back of a vehicle, Syracuse.com reported.

The Onondaga County 911 Center reported receiving an “officer down” call at 8:51 p.m. on Sunday.

The primary suspect in the shooting was also killed, according to WSYR’s NewsChannel 9, an ABC affiliate in Syracuse.

Onondaga County Sheriff Toby Shelley stated at a press conference after 11 p.m, that the area around the home where the shooting happened was now secure, and there was no longer any threat to the community, according to reports.

The identities of the police officers killed have not been released.
