A tragic incident unfolded at a home-based daycare facility in Bronx, New York, where a one-year-old boy lost his life and three other children were rushed to the hospital after allegedly coming into contact with opioids.
During a press conference, New York police revealed that they received a distressing 9-1-1 call from Divino Niño Daycare in Kingsbridge, Bronx, reporting three unconscious children. Tragically, one child did not survive, while the other three remain in critical condition.
Authorities stated that upon arrival at the scene, they discovered a one-year-old, a two-year-old, and an 8-month-old all unconscious. It was later revealed that they had been exposed to “unknown opioids.”
In addition to the three victims found at the daycare, another two-year-old boy who had left less than an hour before was found by his mother to be ”acting lethargic and unresponsive.”
According to reports, all the children had eaten something around 1:00 p.m. and then took a nap. It was after their nap that daycare workers found them unresponsive.
“All three children were unresponsive and demonstrating symptoms of opioid exposure. Narcan was administered to all three of these children in an attempt to save their lives,” they said.
Mayor Eric Adams also addressed the incident, emphasizing the severity of the crisis and urging individuals with opioids or fentanyl in their homes to take immediate action. “Our hearts break for these families that are involved,” he added.
During a search of Divino Nino Daycare, the police uncovered a kilo press commonly used by drug dealers to package large amounts of cocaine, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
Images of the daycare were released, revealing an open box of Lucky Charms cereal near the sink, food placed dangerously close to a stove burner, plastic water bottles in the sink, and scattered bags of popcorn around the microwave.
The individuals in charge of the daycare, Grei Mendez de Ventura and Carlisto Acevedo Brito, who sublet the room, have been taken into custody and are currently being questioned by the police.
The one-year-old boy who tragically lost his life has been identified as Nicholas Dominici, while the identities of the other three children remain private.
The city medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of Nicholas Dominici’s death, and doctors will analyze urine and blood samples from the surviving children to identify the drugs they were exposed to.
