Two Democrats head to runoff in special election for Georgia’s 13th District
Two Democrats, Marcye Scott and Everton Blair Jr., advanced to a runoff in Georgia’s 13th District special election to replace the late Rep.David Scott. Scott, who died shortly before the primary and faced age and health concerns, had won his seat with 71.8% in 2024. The special election was conducted under Georgia law where all candidates run on a single ballot, and if no candidate wins a majority, the top two contend in a runoff. Marcye Scott,daughter of the late Congressman,and Blair,a former gwinnett County School Board Chairman,secured 46.8% and 36.7% of votes respectively, with 93% counted. The winner will serve roughly nine weeks before the next full-term session begins in January. Meanwhile, Democratic state Rep.Jasmine Clark won the primary to face Republican Jonathan Chavez in the regular elections.Jeffries has promised to reverse Medicaid cuts if Democrats gain control of the house.

The results were hardly a surprise — the Republican who scored highest came in third place without breaking into double digits. Marcye Scott, the daughter of the late congressman, and former Gwinnett County School Board Chairman Everton Blair Jr., with 46.8% and 36.7% of the vote, respectively, and 93% counted, will now advance to the Aug. 25 runoff.

Marcye Scott didn’t run in the regular Democratic primary. Democratic state Rep. Jasmine Clark handily won the contest and will go against Republican Jonathan Chavez.
David Scott won the seat in 2024 with 71.8% of the vote despite his age concerns, meaning the result in the special general election and November general election is hardly in doubt.
