Twitter Files: New details on Stanford group’s push for censorship on COVID and vaccines

NThese internal Twitter communications, recently released, provide details on the platform’s communications and interactions with an academic project. This project advocated censoring misinformation that was COVID-19-related.

The social platform accepted communications from the Virality project, a Stanford-based group of analysts and researchers who advocated online censorship for certain narratives and claims during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to internal emails sent by Twitter under the control of Elon Musk, the communications included discussions about the “vaccine passport narrative,” A reference to the possibility that apps used to verify vaccination status might limit freedoms.

Discussions about passports and the project were alleged to be in progress “have driven a larger anti-vaccination narrative about the loss of rights and freedoms.” Many of these emails were used to inform Twitter’s policies regarding the subject. This included echoing the language used in briefings by the project.

Taibbi was called before the Select Subcommittee on the WMD of the Federal Government on March 9. He testified and defended his work on the Twitter Files. He also discussed the government’s relationship with Twitter.

Taibbi and other journalists had access to Twitter’s personal communications. They created the Twitter Files, a collection of reports. These reports detail the company’s decision-making process surrounding Hunter Biden’s laptop, the January 8 banning of former president Donald Trump, as well as its relationship to federal agencies such the FBI.
