Twitter alters the” State-Sponstered Media” brand for NPR.

National Public Radio ( NPR ) is no longer referred to as” state-sponsored media” by Twitter.

On Saturday, Twitter for Elon Musk changed the” state-sponsored media” tag on NPR’s’s account to” government-funded media.”

NPR’s’s account stopped tweeting after the social media behemoth” state-sponsored media” brand was first slapped on the television news channel on Tuesday. A reference to one of NPR’s’s private papers from Tuesday was included in its most recent tweet.

Following Twitter’s’s travel, NPR updated its Twitter profile to say that it is” an independent news organization committed to educating the public about the community around us.”

NPR President and CEO John Lansing expressed his” disturbed” by Twitter’s’s initial decision to refer to the outlet as” state-sponsored media” on Wednesday and branded the action” unacceptable.”

Millions of viewers who rely on us for the impartial, fact-based media we offer support NPR and our Member stations. NPR, which stands for” freedom of speech and holding the amazing guilty,” was tweeted by Lansing.

” Twitter should not judge us in this manner. The health of our republic depends on a strong, beautiful free press, he continued.

Twitter defines” state-affiliated marketing” as” stores where the position controls editorial content through financial information, direct or indirect social pressures, and / or control over production and distribution.”

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting ( CPB ), a nonprofit supported by the federal government, contributes to the partial funding of NPR’s’s radio stations. Public Broadcasting Service ( PBS ) television stations are also funded by the CPB.

However, the CPB website states that NPR is” largely funded by associate stations, distribution services, underwriting and administrative grants, and personal contributions.”

According to NPR, less than 1 % of its annual working budget is made up of offers from CPB and governmental agencies and ministries.

David Gura, an NPR journalist, noted that Twitter’s’s policy appeared to have been altered in order to remove any mention of the organization as a media release with” editorial independence.”

Despite the company’s’s own policy stating that the organization shouldn’t be labeled as such because it has editorial independence, @ elonmusk tweeted on Wednesday that NPR” state – affiliated media” yesterday.

The initial” state-sponsored media” label assigned to NPR drew comparisons to the” China state-affiliated media ,” given to China’s’s Xinhua News, and the Twitter accounts of Russia Today, which were given the labels” Russian state – affiliated media.”

According to the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, the United States government is not permitted to” execute any course, control, or control over the content or distribution of public communications programs and services.”

The British Broadcasting Corporation’s’s( BBC ) Twitter account now bears the same” government-funded media” label.

The BBC swiftly criticized the action.

” To resolve this issue as soon as possible, we are speaking to Twitter.” The BBC has always been a separate entity. We are supported by the American people through the license fee.

What, once more, does BBC come for? Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, remarked in a post,” I keep forgetting.”

The White House joined in on Wednesday to defend NPR as being free from governmental authority.

There is no question about the journalist democracy of NPR, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. You know they have their independence in journalism if you’ve’ve ever been on the receiving end of their questions.
