Former President Barack Obama is praising incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly’s background and record as Kelly, a Democrat, faces a tight election battle with Republican opponent, Blake Masters.
“You gotta be serious, you have to know what you are doing, you have to know how to work hard and be prepared. You can’t half-ass going into space. I’ve never been there, but I’m pretty sure you can’t show up,” Obama said.
Obama indirectly compared Kelly to Sen. John McCain, whose seat Kelly took over in 2020 after a special election. Kelly, on the campaign trail, has also compared himself to McCain, a tactic necessary to attract Independents and Republicans, key to winning statewide races in Arizona.
“Like another senator from Arizona, he has an independent streak,” Obama said.
