Trump warns of ‘Communist menace’ during Mount Rushmore speech
President Donald Trump delivered a speech at Mount Rushmore on the eve of America’s 250th birthday, warning of a resurgence of communism in the United States. He emphasized America’s status as the oldest republic with the “freest people,” celebrating its achievements and exceptionalism. Trump depicted communism as a dangerous enemy opposing American values like life, liberty, and happiness, describing it as an ideology of theft, control, lies, and murder.he declared a commitment to eradicate communism from the country and asserted that America will never become a communist nation.
The speech coincided with criticisms from Zohran Mamdani, the socialist mayor of New York, who spoke behind a statue of George Washington against wealthy elites and government betrayal of the nation’s founding principles. Mamdani highlighted the contrast between past immigrant struggles and current political divisions, accusing leadership of fostering division to serve the powerful.
Trump’s fiery warning about communism comes amid the recent success of socialist candidates in Democratic primaries, particularly in New York and Colorado, with Mamdani emerging as a key figure of the socialist movement and a de facto leader of the Democratic Party amid leadership vacuums from the 2024 elections. Earlier that day, Mamdani critiqued the political establishment for promoting division as a means of gaining power, framing current leadership as working against the legacy of immigrant and oppressed groups overcoming adversity.
Trump linked the ideological threat of communism to broader cultural and political battles, positioning himself as a defender of American exceptionalism while facing challenges related to public perception and ongoing political polarization.
President Donald Trump, speaking in front of Mount Rushmore, used his address on the eve of America’s 250th birthday to warn that there is a “resurgence of the Communist menace in our land.”
His speech came just hours after Zohran Mamdani, the socialist mayor of New York, used a speech while sitting behind the desk of George Washington to rail against wealthy elites, immigration authorities, and accuse political leaders of betraying the country’s founding.

Trump’s dire warning comes as socialists on the left flank of the Democratic party have enjoyed a string of primary election successes ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, most notably in New York and Colorado.
Mamdani has emerged as the poster boy of the socialist movement, and the de facto leader of the Democratic party amidst a leadership vacuum that has not been filled since the 2024 election.
Earlier Friday, from New York City Hall, Mamdani argued that the United States has been defined by generations of immigrants and other groups overcoming oppression while casting today’s political and economic leaders as forces working against that legacy.
Mamdani sought to paint a picture of division in the country as a tool of the rich and powerful.
“At every moment in our past, those who led through exclusion and isolation have tried to win power and enrich themselves by turning us against one another. Division is the oldest trick in politics, and the cheapest.”
