Trump voter says he’s voting for Democratic candidate in new ad

paige Cognetti, the Mayor of Scranton, has launched a new TV ad amid her challenge to Republican incumbent Rob Bresnahan, aiming to enhance her bipartisan appeal in a predominantly right-leaning district. The ad features Bill, a Lackawanna County voter who previously supported Donald Trump, criticizing Bresnahan for stock trading during his tenure and alleging corruption, contrasting her independent and anti-corruption platform. Bresnahan has faced controversy over his extensive stock trades-over 600 since taking office-including healthcare trades before important Medicaid legislation, and has a net worth of nearly $40 million. He proposed a bill to ban members of Congress from stock trading, though a different measure was ultimately passed. Cognetti’s campaign emphasizes her outsider stance and focus on fiscal responsibility, while Bresnahan’s campaign dismisses her as disconnected from local families, citing her background working at Goldman Sachs. In the 2024 election, Bresnahan narrowly won the district, which Donald Trump carried by 8.5 points, amid broader political shifts in Pennsylvania.

EXCLUSIVE — Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti launched a new TV ad in her challenge to Rep. Rob Bresnahan (R-PA) as she looks to boost her bipartisan credentials in a right-leaning district.

The spot, shared first with the Washington Examiner, features Bill, a Lackawanna County voter, who says he voted for President Donald Trump “every time he was on the ballot.”

“But the corruption drives me nuts. Our congressman, Rob Bresnahan, he’s been trading stocks instead of changing Washington. He fits right into that old boys’ club,” Bill continues.

The ad is the start of a six-figure buy on cable and broadcast, according to the Cognetti campaign.

Bresnahan has stirred controversy for prolific stock trading during his first term on Capitol Hill. He’s made several hundred trades since becoming a congressman, including a number of healthcare-related sales just days before Republicans passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which made substantial changes to Medicaid.

He’s made more than 600 trades since his election and has a net worth of nearly $40 million, according to Quiver Quantitative, an investment data platform.

During his campaign for Congress in 2024, Bresnahan advocated banning members of Congress from trading stocks. He introduced a bill to do that in May, though the House recently passed a different stock trade curb in July.

Cognetti launched her bid against Bresnahan touting her independent bid for Scranton mayor in 2019 after the incumbent mayor pleaded guilty to corruption charges.

WHERE TRUMP COULD SPEND HIS $400 MILLION WAR CHEST IN NOVEMBER

“Ran as an independent. Balanced budgets. Fought corruption. Funded the police. She’s an old-school tough gal. So yeah, this three-time Trump voter is voting for Paige Cognetti,” said Bill, the Lackawanna County Trump voter.

The Bresnahan campaign fired back, telling the Washington Examiner in a statement that no “number of ads featuring actual Northeastern Pennsylvanians can cover up the fact that Paige Cognetti is a Harvard-educated Portland liberal whose 20 years working for Goldman Sachs and the Democrat machine have made her completely out of touch with hardworking NEPA families.”

Bresnahan won the Scranton-area district by less than 2 points in 2024, due in part to former Vice President Kamala Harris’s statewide collapse in Pennsylvania. He unseated former Rep. Matt Cartwright, who had represented the seat for 10 years. Trump carried the seat by 8.5 points in 2024.
