Trump support climbing in GOP primary poll as DeSantis tumbles

According to recent polls, former President Donald Trump’s support has been steadily increasing in recent months while Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) numbers are taking a hit.

The latest Monmouth University poll shows that Trump now leads DeSantis by 14 percentage points, a reversal from previous polls conducted in February and December. In the Republican presidential primary survey with a wide field, Trump is at 41%, DeSantis at 27%, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley at 3%, and all other candidates at 1% or less. 23% of respondents have not decided which candidate to support.

While DeSantis and Trump are both still the front-runners, DeSantis’s support has been slipping since the start of 2023. Trump, on the other hand, has experienced a rise in his numbers after backing several high-profile candidates who lost in the 2022 midterm elections.

In a head-to-head between DeSantis and Trump, DeSantis is now trailing behind Trump, with 46% supporting DeSantis and 47% for Trump. This is a stark contrast to February when DeSantis was leading Trump by ten points.

DeSantis has yet to announce his intention to run for the White House, but there are strong indications that he will confirm a presidential run in late May or early June once the legislative session in Florida concludes. According to reports, DeSantis said, “if I were to run, I’m running against Biden.”

DeSantis has responded to Trump’s nicknames for him, stating that he can call him whatever he wants as long as he calls him a “winner” too.
