Trump support climbing in GOP primary poll as DeSantis tumbles: Poll

Support for former President Donald Trump has been on the rise in recent months, while Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has seen a decline in recent polls, according to a new poll from Monmouth University.

In a wide Republican presidential primary field, the poll shows Trump leading DeSantis by 14 percentage points, with Trump receiving 41%, DeSantis at 27%, and all other candidates receiving 1% or less. Monmouth’s poll in December 2022 showed DeSantis leading Trump in the wider field, while a February survey from the same pollster showed DeSantis and Trump tied with 33% each.

In a head-to-head matchup with only DeSantis and Trump as options, the Florida governor now trails Trump with 46% to 47%, after leading Trump 53% to 40% in a survey conducted in February.

Despite both Trump and DeSantis remaining front-runners for the GOP primary, DeSantis’ numbers have declined since the beginning of 2023, while Trump’s have increased after the disappointing results of last November’s midterm elections.

DeSantis has not yet confirmed a presidential bid, but it is believed he will do so in late May or early June once the state’s legislative session concludes.

During an appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored on Fox Nation, DeSantis fueled speculation of his potential candidacy by saying, “If I were to run, I’m running against Biden.” When asked about Trump’s derogatory nicknames for him, DeSantis responded, “You can call me whatever you want, just as long as you also call me a ‘winner.'”
