Trump ‘seriously considering making Venezuela the 51st state’
President Donald Trump said Monday that he is “seriously considering” making Venezuela the 51st U.S. state, months after removing Nicolas Maduro from power. Speaking to Fox News, Trump pointed to Venezuela’s vast oil reserves as a key reason, and added, “Venezuela loves Trump.”
The remarks come as the administration has emphasized stabilizing the Americas, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio influencing the approach. After a Jan. 3 operation that captured Maduro and was meant to bring him to the U.S. for trial, Trump also urged American oil companies to return to Venezuela to increase oil production and refining. U.S. flights resumed earlier this month; Delcy Rodriguez, Venezuela’s interim president, said new elections would be held “sometime,” without specifying a timeline.
