Trump says Lindsey Graham urged him to cut a deal with Iran
President Donald Trump revealed that late Senator Lindsey Graham urged him to pursue a deal with Iran before his passing earlier this month. Trump described Graham as a hawk on Iran who later believed making a deal was better than further destruction. Trump stated that Iran has disputed ongoing negotiations, though he claims the U.S.remains in a strong position and emphasizes the urgency of preventing Iran from damaging critical infrastructure like bridges and power plants. Additionally, Trump mentioned that graham is very militant about Ukraine, though he noted Graham may have different views on Ukraine than on Iran.Trump also discussed preparations for upcoming meetings with Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, just before Graham’s funeral. He acknowledged Netanyahu’s concerns about Iranian activity and expressed confidence in U.S. intelligence capabilities.

“He was very much a hawk, as you would say, on Iran and, over the last few weeks, I would say that he became, like, ‘If you can make a deal, it’s better than, better making a deal in this case than just destroying the rest of the country,’” Trump told Fox News’s Fox and Friends on Tuesday. “We’ve destroyed most of it, frankly. But he was, he was somebody that said, ‘It’s a good time to make a deal, nice time to make a deal.’”

But as an aside, Trump added that he “wouldn’t say necessarily [Graham] feels that way about Ukraine.”
“He’s very militant about [Ukraine],” he said.
Amid a break in military strikes between the United States and Iran since the collapse of the memorandum of understanding, with Trump attributing the break to his providing the two countries with the opportunity to make a deal, the president, however, remained adamant that the U.S. continued to be in “a very strong position right now.”
“If they don’t make a deal, the bridges are going to be gone, literally in less than a, I would say in two hours, most of the bridges, the major bridges, will all be gone, and the power plants in one day,” he said. “If I can avoid doing that, I’d like to do that. The hardest thing to build is a power plant. The longest thing to build is a bridge.”
Iran has disputed Trump’s insistence that the two countries have reengaged in negotiations.
Trump’s comments came less than an hour before the president was scheduled to sit down with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky before Graham’s funeral.

Of Netanyahu, Trump said he was mindful of the political pressure he is under regarding the Iran war before Israeli elections in October, with the prime minister increasing his warnings concerning Iranian activity around Pickaxe Mountain and the nuclear facilities underneath it.
“I don’t need Bibi to tell me that,” he concluded. “Bibi is telling me that because he wants me to stay involved. I mean, I don’t necessarily … we have the finest, because of Space Force, we have the greatest cameras in the world focused on. We know exactly what’s going on.”
