Trump says Iran violated ceasefire with drones in Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump issued a warning regarding Iran’s recent attack in the Strait of Hormuz, describing Iran’s firing of four one-way attack drones at ships as a “foolish violation” of their agreement. He reported that one drone hit a large cargo ship causing damage but no casualties, while three others were shot down. The incident complicates ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and Iran over a new nuclear deal, including discussions on Iran’s uranium stockpile. Trump highlighted that the U.S. is negotiating from a position of strength, stating the Strait is open and the U.S. has made meaningful progress. “The Islamic Republic of Iran shot at least four One Way Attack Drones at Ships transversing the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday. “One of the Drones solidly hit the upper deck of a large and very expensive Cargo Carrying Ship. Damage was done, but the Ship was able to proceed on its way. We knocked down three other Drones. Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.”

A U.S. official confirmed to the Washington Examiner on Thursday that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had “struck” a cargo ship “with a drone.” The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations Centre first reported the attack Thursday afternoon, writing that “a cargo vessel has been hit on the starboard side by an unknown projectile, causing damage to the bridge,” but no casualties.
Trump signed the MOU with Iran last Friday during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles, outside of Paris, after attending the G7 leaders summit in Évian-les-Bains, France.
But despite negotiations getting underway last weekend in nearby Switzerland at the Bürgenstock Resort, Lake Lucerne, the ceasefire has been repeatedly undermined not only by threats to the strait, but also Israel and Hezbollah‘s exchange of strikes in Lebanon and Trump’s own rhetoric toward Iran.

Prior to his social media post, Trump had reiterated how Iran “wants to make a deal with us very badly,” regardless of pushback from the regime.
“We knocked the hell out of them. And now we’re negotiating from a position of pure strength. Pure strength. They know that,” he told farmers at the White House on Thursday. “And the strait’s already open. And we’re setting records in the strait.”
