Trump says he’ll miss Al Green’s SOTU antics after primary loss

Donald Trump said he’ll miss Rep. Al Green’s dramatic protests at the State of the Union after Green lost a Texas primary runoff less than a day earlier.Trump criticized Green in a Truth Social post, saying Green, who is known for theatrical heckling of Trump during congressional addresses, was “not screaming and violently waving his cane” during the next State of the Union.

The article notes that Green, an 11-term Democrat, was defeated by Christian Menefee in the runoff following redistricting. It also recounts Green’s prior removals from or discipline over incidents during Trump-related addresses, including a February removal after he displayed a racist sign and another 2025 incident that led to censure by the House.

President Donald Trump claimed in a new social media post that he will miss Rep. Al Green’s (D-TX) flair for dramatic protests at the State of the Union, less than one day after the Texas Democrat lost a primary runoff election.

“Al Green, one of the most mentally deficient Congressmen in the history of our Country, has lost, in a landslide, his seat in Congress,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday morning. “But I will miss that lunatic not screaming and violently waving his cane at me during my next State of the Union Speech.”

The 38-year-old Rep. Christian Menefee (D-TX) defeated Green, 78, during their Tuesday primary runoff matchup, after the two were placed in the same seat by mid-decade redistricting. Since Trump’s 2024 presidential win, Democrats have faced internal generational battles, with younger members pressuring elder lawmakers to step down. In some instances, younger Democrats have challenged their senior leaders in primary elections.

Green, an 11-term congressman, was notorious for staging demonstrations against Trump’s address to both chambers of Congress.

In February, Green was removed from the State of the Union after he displayed a sign that read “BLACK PEOPLE AREN’T APES!” The Texas lawmaker was referencing a video that Trump had shared online of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama as apes.

In 2025, Green was removed from the House chamber for heckling the president during Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress. The House later censured him over the incident.

The Texas Democrat filed at least six unsuccessful articles of impeachment against Trump in both his first and second terms.
