Trump claims Europe’s Ukraine support falls short by approximately $100 billion compared to the US.
Former President Donald Trump Calls for Increased European Support for Ukraine
During an interview on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures, former President Donald Trump emphasized the need for Europe to step up its support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump claimed that European countries are currently “$100 billion short” in their assistance.
When asked by Maria Bartiromo if he would continue sending money from American taxpayers to Ukraine, Trump responded, “I’d get the war settled.” He pointed out that Europe is contributing significantly less compared to the United States, despite being geographically closer to the conflict. Trump questioned why the US has provided $150 billion in aid while Europe has only given $20 billion, considering that their economies are similar in size.
Trump has repeatedly expressed his confidence in swiftly resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, even claiming that it could be done in less than a day. In a previous interview with Bartiromo, he outlined his approach to ending the war within 24 hours. “I would tell Zelensky: No more. You got to make a deal. I would tell Putin: If you don’t make a deal, we’re going to give them a lot. We’re going to give them more than they ever got if we have to,” Trump stated on July 16.
According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, the US has provided over $113 billion in aid to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion more than a year ago. While other countries have also offered support, the majority of assistance has come from the US. European institutions and countries have committed a combined 54.9 billion euros in aid to Ukraine.
Trump drew a parallel between his call for increased European support and his actions as president in 2019 when he reduced funding to NATO’s budget. He has previously criticized NATO allies for not meeting the 2% NATO defense spending target. “They weren’t paying, and I made them pay and took in hundreds of billions of dollars,” Trump explained.
