Trump resurrects ‘slow-walked’ FBI 2020 election investigation in Michigan

President Donald Trump instructed the FBI to reopen an investigation into alleged voter fraud related to the 2020 election, which led to police raids on Democratic voting groups in Michigan. during the investigation, some canvassers admitted to submitting fraudulent voter registrations, but the biden administration criticized the slow progress of the inquiry, accusing it of being underreported or suppressed.Declassified documents released by the White House indicate that the FBI found evidence of fraudulent applications, with some originating from a single individual submitting thousands of applications with suspicious details like fake addresses and matching handwriting. The investigation also uncovered instances where individuals received ballots or registration materials despite not registering, and some attempts at vote collection involved potential misconduct. Former U.S.Attorney Andrew Birge was informed about the case in 2021 and indicated readiness to pursue charges for wire fraud and related offenses. Though, after extensive investigation, authorities ultimately dropped the case, citing no crimes found. The White House accused the FBI of concealing evidence of election interference despite the findings of fraud.

President Donald Trump directed the FBI to reopen an investigation into alleged 2020 election fraud that prompted Michigan police officers to raid a Democratic voting group, the White House announced on Thursday.

Get-out-the-vote canvassers admitted to the FBI that they were signing and submitting fraudulent voter registrations in the swing state, but the Biden administration “slow-walked the investigation for years,” the White House said, releasing newly declassified documents on the case. FBI Director Kash Patel is now “being directed to ensure that the matter is fully investigated, and to work with the Department of Justice to prosecute those responsible for any crimes,” according to the White House.

Patel’s FBI did not respond to the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment. Trump released the records as part of broader 2020 election interference claims he made in a Thursday night address, including allegations that the federal government covered up evidence of Chinese state meddling.

The FBI learned in October 2020 that the Michigan State Police, Democratic Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office, and the Muskegon Police Department were looking into possibly fraudulent voter registrations submitted to the Muskegon City Clerk’s Office, the FBI documents say. Former President Joe Biden won Michigan by roughly 3% against Trump in 2020 before Trump won the battleground state in 2024 against then-Vice President Kamala Harris.

“MCCO determined some of the applications were fraudulent based on non-existent addresses, invalid phone numbers, and signatures on applications not matching Michigan Secretary of State voting or DMV records,” the FBI wrote. “In addition, many applications appeared to have the same hand writing.”

Authorities traced the application’s origins and found that someone, whose name is redacted in the records, “submitted approximately 8 to 10 thousand applications of which an undetermined number appeared fraudulent,” according to the FBI.

The suspicious activity extended beyond Muskegon, with one witness saying she received an absentee ballot and voter registration ID card in the mail in 2020 despite not registering to vote, according to an FBI file on “Possible Election Fraud in Southfield.” The witness allegedly recalled an encounter where a man “wearing a Biden shirt” came to her home and offered to collect an absentee ballot for her and to help her register on a tablet.

Former U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge, appointed by former Trump-era Attorney General Jeff Sessions, was informed about the case in March 2021 and said his office would prosecute for wire fraud and any other federal crimes “that could be proven,” the FBI documents show.

PLANNED PARENTHOOD ACCUSED OF POSSIBLE FRAUD OVER SEX-CHANGE ‘CARE’

The case led to a local police raid on a Democratic get-out-the-vote group and an FBI investigation that persisted for four years, according to the documents. However, the FBI’s Detroit team and an assistant U.S. attorney eventually dropped the investigation after exhausting leads and reporting no crimes.

“Even when significant evidence of fraud has been detected, it has been buried and covered up,” Trump’s White House said Thursday about the declassified files.
