Trump re-endorses Jeff Hurd after yanking support over tariffs
President Donald Trump has re-endorsed Colorado Republican Rep. Jeff Hurd after previously withdrawing his support over Hurd’s vote to repeal tariffs on Canada. In a Truth Social post, Trump saeid he met with Hope Scheppelman, Hurd’s primary challenger, to discuss opportunities to serve beyond congress and announced that Scheppelman and her husband will suspend their house campaign to join teh Trump administration in a capacity to be determined. Trump declared he will fully back Hurd’s reelection and framed the move as aligned with shared goals such as securing the border, energy dominance, and helping working families. Hurd thanked the president and said he will continue to represent Colorado’s 3rd District and run a serious campaign to earn voters’ support.The decision follows Trump’s earlier withdrawal of his endorsement after Hurd and five other Republicans voted with Democrats to repeal the 35% tariffs on Canada, with Trump warning of consequences for primary races.The other GOP defectors named include Don Bacon, Brian Fitzpatrick, kevin Kiley, Thomas Massie, and Dan Newhouse, with Bac on and Newhouse not seeking reelection in 2026 and the others having varying records with Trump’s endorsement.
Trump re-endorses Jeff Hurd after yanking support over tariff repeal vote
President Donald Trump re-endorsed Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-CO) on Friday after rescinding his support last month over the congressman’s vote to repeal the administration’s tariffs on Canada.
Trump said in a Truth Social post that he met with Hope Scheppelman, Hurd’s primary challenger, to discuss “various opportunities” to serve other than in Congress. He announced that she will suspend her House campaign and, with her husband, join the Trump administration “in a capacity to be determined.”
“Together with them, we decided that Congressman Jeff Hurd, of Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, should in no way, shape, or form, be impeded from winning the District in that the Democrat alternative is a DISASTER for our Country,” the president wrote. “Therefore, I will be fully supporting Jeff’s Re-Election to the House of Representatives, giving him my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Hurd thanked the president on Friday for his “efforts to unify Republicans in Colorado’s Third District.”
“The President and I share the same goals: securing the border, American energy dominance, and helping working families,” Hurd said. “I will continue to focus on representing Colorado’s Third District, delivering results for rural Colorado, and running a serious campaign to earn the support of voters across the district.”
Last month, Trump called Hurd a “RINO,” or Republican in name only, and said he had “let me and our Country down” when rescinding his endorsement. However, in his post on Friday, he said Hurd “will do a fantastic job as your Congressman.”
This switch-up in support comes almost a month after Trump withdrew his endorsement of Hurd. The congressman, along with five other Republicans, voted with nearly all Democrats to repeal the 35% tariffs on Canada.
After the vote, Trump threatened that any Republicans who voted against tariffs would “seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” Ten days later, he withdrew his endorsement of Hurd.

The other five GOP defectors were Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Kevin Kiley (I-CA), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Dan Newhouse (R-WA).
Bacon and Newhouse are not seeking reelection in 2026, and Fitzpatrick often detracts from the party on various foreign policy measures. Trump has not endorsed Kiley since his 2022 campaign, and the president is not quiet about his dislike for Massie, against whom he is aggressively pushing a primary challenger.
