Trump pushes Thune to cancel August recess over SAVE America Act

President Donald Trump is urging senate Republican leader john Thune to forgo teh August recess until the Senate passes the Save America Act, which aims to address key issues like the debt ceiling, budget, adn election integrity. Trump, along with other conservatives such as Senators Mike Lee and Rick Scott, are calling for the Senate to stay in session to push this legislation forward, criticizing the current leadership for perhaps leaving town without passing it. Despite growing pressure, Thune has indicated he lacks the votes to bypass the filibuster and is not willing to disrupt Senate norms. The House GOP has incorporated the Save America Act into their legislative agenda in an attempt to break Senate opposition, but it remains unlikely to pass without Democratic support. Senate Republicans are scheduled to meet soon, but some members are hesitant to jeopardize Senate norms to advance these bills amid ongoing political debates.

President Donald Trump is joining the growing chorus of Republicans calling on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to forgo an August recess to pass the SAVE America Act in a recent social media post.

“John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes The Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER, where Republicans can then quickly pass everything they ever dreamed of, including a full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT, the Budget, and the ever looming Debt Ceiling disaster, 1929!” Trump posted on Truth Social on Monday morning.

Senate Republicans will convene on Capitol Hill on Monday evening with just two weeks before they leave town for a month, but Thune has repeatedly insisted he does not have enough votes to bypass the 60-vote threshold to get around a filibuster, nor is he willing to disrupt Senate norms to appease Trump despite the growing pressure.

“The Dumocrats will do it on day one, and can’t believe how lucky they got with this Senate leadership. Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!” Trump warned in his post.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) also took to social media to call on Thune to cancel the August recess to debate the SAVE America Act over the weekend.

“The Senate doesn’t need a summer vacation as much as the country needs the SAVE America Act. Let’s cancel recess,” he wrote on X.

Similarly, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) pushed Thune to pass the election integrity legislation and threatened to take action on his desires.
“I will vote to stay in session unless we have passed the SAVE America Act,” he wrote on X. “The American people expect us to deliver. They deserve secure elections.”

HOUSE GOP THREADS SAVE AMERICA ACT INTO LEGISLATIVE AGENDA IN EFFORT TO BREAK SENATE

No Democratic senator supports the bill, and past votes on the SAVE America Act have demonstrated that it remains far from securing the 60-votes needed to pass.

Thune responded to pressure last week from White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to pass the legislation by telling reporters, “Maybe she or somebody else ought to get on the phone and get the votes. Right? It’s 50 around here.”
