Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump postponed his Saturday night rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, due to the threat of inclement weather.

The former president addressed the crowd via phone shortly after 6:30, less than half an hour before the event was scheduled to begin. He apologized to his supporters, assuring them that he would return to Aero Center Wilmington at a later date.

“We’re flying in in a few minutes, but they really would prefer that we not come in because there’s a certain danger to all of this, and we want to make sure that everybody is safe above all,” Trump told the crowd. “And so they’ve asked us to ask people to leave the site and seek shelter.”

The rally would have been Trump’s first since the first of his four criminal trials began this week in New York. As of Friday, all 12 jurors and six alternates had been selected.

“What we’ll do is we’ll make up for this very quickly at another time, but we’ll do it as quick as possible,” Trump said. “I’m devastated that this could happen, but we want to keep everybody safe — it’s the most important thing. … If you don’t mind, I think we’re going to have to just do a rain check, I’m so sad. I’m in North Carolina right now and waiting to go in, but they’re saying the weather is really getting bad.”

It is unclear when the rally will be made up, but Trump said, “We’ll do it bigger and better.” The former president is just over six months away from a 2020 rematch against his successor, Democrat Joe Biden.
