President Donald Trump reiterated his attacks against the filibuster on Saturday, suggesting it was helping Democrats to achieve victories in their fight against his agenda.
Trump has shown increasing frustration with the filibuster as the government shutdown drags into the longest to date, leading him to propose getting rid of the procedure altogether. He continued these attacks on Saturday, saying it was threatening to destroy the economy.
“The Democrats are winning in that they are destroying our great, miracle economy, which is exactly what they set out to do. TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!” he wrote on Truth Social.
The post marks a continuation of a particularly ferocious attack Trump has waged over the past few days, making several urgent demands that Republicans in the Senate do away with it.
“Republicans, Terminate the Filibuster and bring back the American Dream,” he wrote on Friday. “If you don’t do it, the Dems will, and you’ll never see office again! President DJT.”
“Just say NO (Nuclear Option!),” Trump wrote in another post. “TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER!”
Trump’s new urgency to eliminate the filibuster was sparked by Democratic victories in Tuesday’s elections, winning landslide victories in every major race. The president has said the government shutdown was a “bigger factor, negative, for the Republicans.”
The filibuster tends to be opposed by whichever party is in power, with their position flipping when they’re out of power. In a Friday press conference, Trump countered this argument by claiming that Republicans would put forward such popular policies that they wouldn’t have to worry about losing power.
The policies will allow Republicans to win the midterms, and after that, they “will have the most productive three years in the history of our country.” But if they do not, the GOP will be “in a slog with the Democrats” and not be as productive.
“If we do it, we will never lose the midterms and we will never lose the general election, because we will have produced so many different things for our people, for the people, for the country, that it would be impossible to lose an election,” Trump said.

He outlined several policies that would pass if the filibuster was eliminated, further boosting his argument.
“Here’s some of the things that we’d pass if we terminated the filibuster: voter ID, no mail-in voting, no cash bail, no men in women’s sports, no welfare for illegals. You could go on and on,” Trump told reporters.
