President Donald Trump defended his efforts to pressure Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, but said he’d be “willing” to personally call Senate Republican holdouts to secure their votes.

Trump‘s comments came after White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Thursday that the president’s patience was running thin with Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) for failing to move the bill. Thune, who has consistently stated the bill doesn’t have the requisite votes, responded by suggesting that Leavitt should “pick up the phone” and find the votes herself.

The Washington Examiner asked Trump directly Friday if, based on Thune’s comments, he could be doing more to advance the bill. Trump said that he’d already flipped “three congressman, maybe four,” in the House to pass the measure and was willing to do more in the Senate.

“I’d certainly be willing — I mean, he’s got four or five people that are very difficult,” Trump said. “A couple of them I put out of office. I understand how it feels.”

“Look, who cannot approve voter ID? Who cannot approve proof of citizenship?,” Trump continued. “Who wouldn’t approve voter ID and a photo ID? Who wouldn’t approve proof of citizenship? And the Democrats don’t want it because they cheat, but no Republican should put us in a position where they don’t approve something like that.”
