Former President Donald Trump visited a construction site on Thursday morning in New York, where he is dealing with his hush money trial.

Trump was greeted by chants cheering him on during his visit as he faces multiple legal battles while campaigning for the White House in the 2024 presidential election. The former president and presumptive Republican Party nominee also answered a few questions from the press, with Trump indicating that the construction workers with whom he was meeting had been Democrats but are now Republicans.

“There’s not a Democrat in there,” Trump told a reporter from Fox News. “These are people. Look at that building. Look what we can do. We’ve built a lot of great buildings in this city with these people, and they’ve given me great support. They’re really amazing.”

Trump also explained he believes he can win New York in the election, a state that is usually driven by larger cities voting Democratic. He added there are “some very bad people” in New York but also that “we have the greatest people, and they’re right behind me.”

In the wake of Trump’s visit, Bob Bartels, a manager for Steamfitters Local 638 union, appeared on Fox News’s Fox & Friends to state that he would be supporting Trump in the election despite being a lifelong Democrat. Bartels added that he and other people in his union are tired of the price of groceries, rising crime, and illegal immigration and said his members are choosing Trump over Biden 3-1, according to an internal poll.

Trump made his visit to the construction site ahead of his court appearance on Thursday, which is continuing his hush money trial. The former president is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide an alleged hush money payment to former pornography film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016.

Also on Thursday, the Supreme Court will consider whether Trump can enjoy any immunity against the federal charges he faces. Trump has argued that former presidents can have broad immunity from criminal charges and that any finding to the contrary would “incapacitate every future president,” according to his attorneys.
