Trump endorses Ty Masterson for Kansas governor
President Donald trump endorsed Kansas Senate President Ty masterson for governor, formally backing the Trump-aligned candidate and citing Masterson’s stance on the Second Amendment, support for cutting taxes, and commitment to securing the border.
Trump earlier in the month and thru last year’s activity has shown close engagement with Masterson’s campaign, including that Trumpworld figures supported Masterson through outside groups and the White House sent a letter praising Masterson and the GOP-led state legislature for advancing Trump’s priorities. Masterson publicly thanked Trump and said Kansas needs a conservative who will “fight and win.”
With Gov. Laura Kelly term-limited and unable to seek a third term, the endorsement positions Masterson for the August GOP primary, where he is one of nine candidates. The news also contrasts Trump’s endorsement approach, noting his recent support for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over Sen.john Cornyn (which drew some Republican backlash), alongside examples of past Trump-backed candidates winning primaries and races.
