Former President Donald Trump made it known Friday as he headed into the “freezing” courtroom for his hush money trial proceedings in New York that he believes the temperature has been kept cold in the courthouse “on purpose.”

Trump has complained about the temperature in court before, but this is the first time he is shifting blame for it.

“We have another day in court in a freezing courthouse,” Trump said.

“It’s very cold in there, on purpose, I believe. They don’t seem to be able to get the temperature up. It shouldn’t be that complicated,” he said.

Trump wished Melania Trump a happy 54th birthday before complaining about the temperature in the courthouse and finished his remarks by repeating his claim that the trial was “rigged.”

Judge Juan Merchan has commented on the cold temperatures in the courthouse, saying if the temperature were adjusted, it “would go up about 30 degrees,” which he would not prefer.

Merchan’s remarks came despite Trump attorney Todd Blanche pleading with him to turn up the temperature in the courtroom last week. Blanche remarked that others in the room were feeling the cold as well.

Trump’s claim that the cold temperatures in the courtroom could be “on purpose” didn’t appear to be taking aim at anyone in particular, but judges have been known to turn temperatures colder to keep people awake.

New York Magazine’s Olivia Nuzzi remarked in a podcast that on the first day of the trial, during which Trump was alleged to have fallen asleep, it was warmer in the courtroom.

U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is presiding over Trump’s criminal case in Washington for attempting to overturn the 2020 election, told jurors in a trial last year that she prefers the courtroom to be warm.

A trial with Chutkan is one that Trump is aiming not to appear in any time soon, and Chutkan has indicated she expects his trial to be further delayed.
