Trump claims to outrank Taylor Swift on TikTok popularity

president Donald Trump claims he is the most-followed person on TikTok, surpassing celebrities like Taylor Swift, with 16.6 million followers. However, he is not actually in the top 10, where accounts like Khabane Lane, Charli D’Amelio, and mrbeast lead with hundreds of millions of followers. Trump asserts that his top ranking indicates there is no Chinese influence on TikTok, as his account promotes pro-american and anti-communist messages. Despite concerns about TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance and national security, a deal was reached where ByteDance sold its U.S. operations to american firms including Oracle, forming a joint venture to protect user data. Trump signed an executive order endorsing this deal, which allowed TikTok to continue operating in the U.S. and was seen as a political win, with Trump emphasizing that American companies now own TikTok. He also highlighted that his own social media popularity remains significant.

President Donald Trump said on Monday he is “by far” the most-followed person on TikTok and had surpassed Taylor Swift, while pushing back against claims of Chinese influence on the social media platform.

Trump claimed a newly released list showed him ranked as the top person on the social media platform, but did not provide any additional evidence to support the ranking.

“It was announced about two days ago. The new numbers just came out. You know who the No. 1 person in TikTok is by far?” Trump asked. “Trump, me. I’m No. 1. … Taylor Swift was number 11. I’m No. 1 on TikTok by far.”

However, Trump is not the top person on TikTok or in the top 10 of followed users.

Khabane Lane, Charli D’Amelio, and MrBeast are the top three accounts followed on TikTok, according to Social Blade, a website that tracks statistics and growth of content creators across social platforms.

The president currently has 16.6 million followers on TikTok, while the top user, Khabane Lane, has 162.3 million followers. Taylor Swift is also not in the top 10, but has 33.3 million followers.

Trump explained that because he is the top person on TikTok, it wouldn’t make sense that there is Chinese influence, since his account promotes pro-American and anti-communist ideas.

“The numbers just came out, and I said, ‘Well, I’m hearing about how they influence. They are talking about [how] they’re a tremendous danger because of the influence,” Trump said. “If they influence so badly, I’m saying all things like I love our country, we have to stop Communism. We’re doing a lot of things.”

In recent years, TikTok has become a point of contention over national security concerns due to the social media app’s parent company being owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company.

Congress overwhelmingly passed a bill in 2024 to ban TikTok from app stores unless ByteDance sold the platform to a non-Chinese buyer.

The lawmakers feared the company could cooperate with the Chinese government to obtain sensitive data from American users or manipulate the algorithm to spread propaganda.

But the ban was ultimately avoided when TikTok finalized a $14 billion deal in January to form a new American entity with Oracle, private equity firm Silver Lake, and the Abu Dhabi-based MGX to control TikTok’s operations in the U.S. and ensure users’ data security.

The president approved the American joint-venture divestment plan, signing an executive order in September after months of back-and-forth over the ban.

Trump, who credits TikTok with helping him win the 2024 election, was against the TikTok ban from the first day of his second administration, creating a 75-day extension for divestment so Americans could continue using the app.

While pushing back on claims of Chinese influence in the U.S., Trump reminded reporters that American companies took over the operations of TikTok.

“So, I guess, I don’t know, maybe they are bad, maybe they are not. I know one thing: great American people, tremendous business people, and companies bought it,” Trump said. “I called President Xi, and everyone said he was a hard no. I said it’s a good thing for TikTok, but it’s good for us, too. American companies, great ones, own our TikTok, and it is very influential. But I’m No. 1 by a lot.”
