Trump chastizes Pirro over Reflecting Pool case: ‘Folded like an umbrella’

President Donald Trump criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro for her decision to dismiss the indictment of a former Olympian, David Hearn, accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Trump claimed that Pirro “choked” because the judge was aggressive and accused her of falling short in pursuing the case, particularly because she noted that the damage resulted from flawed installation by the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings, rather than vandalism.

Pirro’s motion to dismiss pointed out that facts was incomplete, indicating that damage was likely caused by faulty installation, and she questioned whether vandalism was the sole cause. She acknowledged reliance on the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) initial assessment, which attributed the damage to vandalism, but later received additional documents suggesting contractor error.

Trump defended the contractor’s work, dismissed questions about reconsidering Pirro’s role, and accused reporters of “fake news” when questioned about her dismissal.Recent reports suggest Trump is considering removing Pirro due to her conclusion that vandalism was not responsible for the damage.

Hearn had pleaded not guilty to property destruction charges, and evidence indicated that the damage might have been caused by installation flaws rather than vandalism. the situation has sparked controversy, with Trump expressing disappointment in Pirro’s handling of the case, which he believes was influenced by external pressure and inadequate inquiry.

President Donald Trump said Monday that U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro “choked” in deciding to dismiss the indictment of a former Olympian accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

“I think she choked because the judge was really vicious,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “Instead of going after the people that did it, the judge went after her and went after her department, and I guess she choked. I don’t know what the hell happened.”

Trump has maintained that the problems with the Reflecting Pool following his multimillion-dollar renovation were the result of vandalism and lambasted Pirro for not keeping up the fight.

“Really disappointed with Jeanine Pirro,” Trump said. “She folded like an umbrella, and people get away with things, and it’s a disgrace.”

Pirro filed the motion to dismiss the indictment against former Olympian David Hearn on Friday, admitting that the tears in the pool’s liner were the result of “flawed installation by the contractor.” She faulted the Interior Department for not providing her with the full scope of information.

On Monday, Trump defended the contractor’s work and detailed the process of renovating the landmark.

“We did a great job,” he said. “We got very expensive material to put on top of the surface that always leaked because it was stone.”

When asked if he would reconsider Pirro’s role due to her motion to dismiss in the Reflecting Pool case, Trump ripped the reporter for asking such a question.

“You’re fake news. Don’t ever talk again. You’re fake news,” he said.

But recent reporting from CNN suggests the president is considering removing Pirro for her conclusion that vandals were not responsible for damages to the pool.

In her filing, Pirror particularly faulted the contractor for “rushing” the project in order for it to be completed in time for events celebrating the 250th anniversary of America’s founding.

“It was not until after the return of the indictment, that the DOI provided additional documents to the USAO-DC indicating that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in June 2026 was the result of flawed installation by the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings (‘AIC’), and the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026,” the court filing to dismiss the DOJ’s initial indictment reads.

In the filing, Pirro conceded that her office “could only rely on information provided by DOI that the damage was entirely caused by vandals, including the defendant in this case,” adding that once she had received all of the information from the interior department, it could not be determined that the damage to the pool was solely due to vandals.

Hearn was accused of damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in June and was later indicted by a grand jury. He had pleaded not guilty to one felony count of property destruction.

According to court documents, a National Park Service engineer sent an alert to the contractor notifying them of “peeling” liner about a week before Hearn was seen near the pool. Pirro also noted that some of the damage was in the center of the monument, “where a vandal would not likely attempt to peel the lining.”

“Given all of this newly discovered information, it is difficult to attribute the widespread damage to the Reflecting Pool to vandalism,”  the motion concluded.
