Former President Donald Trump mourned the death of a New York police officer on Thursday while lamenting the high level of crime the state is dealing with, saying the recent death and others like it “should never happen.”

Trump was attending the wake of Jonathan Diller, a 31-year-old officer who was killed during a traffic stop in Queens on Monday evening. Speaking to the press, Trump expressed frustration that Diller’s suspected killer, Guy Rivera, had 21 prior arrests before Monday night, and that attacks on police are happening “all too often.”

“They don’t learn because they don’t respect, they’re not given the respect, the police are the greatest people we have, there’s nothing and there’s nobody like them, and this should never happen,” Trump said in mourning Diller’s death.

The former president added that he had met with Diller’s wife and child, and expressed sorrow that the family would “never be the same.” Trump also called for increased “law and order.”

“The only thing we can say is maybe something’s going to be learned,” Trump said. “We’ve got to toughen it up, we’ve got to strengthen it up. This should never be allowed. Things like this shouldn’t take place and to take place so often.”

Diller had approached a car that was parked illegally at a bus stop at about 6 p.m. with a fellow New York Police Department officer. Two men were in the vehicle at the time, but Rivera got out of the car with a gun and shot Diller. The other officer fired back, striking the suspect in the back.

Diller had worked for the NYPD for three years, during which he received recognition for “excellent police duty” three times by the department.

“It takes unimaginable courage to protect and serve New York City, knowing there’s a chance you might not make it home to your family at the end of the day,” Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said in a statement. “NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller was the personification of that courage, and his heroism in making the ultimate sacrifice in the name of public safety will never be forgotten. My heart breaks for his family, friends, colleagues and the entire NYPD.”
