Trump calls on DHS to add 20,000 officers for deportation efforts – Washington Examiner

President Donald Trump has proposed the addition of 20,000 law enforcement officers to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to facilitate what he claims would be the largest deportation effort in U.S. history. In a statement focused on encouraging undocumented immigrants to voluntarily leave the country, Trump called for the DHS to deploy various law enforcement agents, including state and local officers and other former federal agents, by a specified deadline of 60 days following his proclamation.

Concerns have been raised about how this initiative will be funded, particularly as Trump and Congressional Republicans are looking to implement important cuts to the federal budget. Currently, about 6,000 officers are involved in deportation enforcement through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In addition to the proposed increase in personnel, DHS officials announced a plan to incentivize self-deportation by offering migrants $1,000 plus travel costs to leave the U.S. voluntarily, under what Trump referred to as “Project Homecoming.” The proclamation emphasizes giving illegal immigrants a choice between voluntary departure with government support or facing potential enforcement actions. The Trump management has previously attempted mass deportations through extensive raids and expanded the authorities of ICE agents to operate in areas such as schools and churches, previously deemed sensitive or off-limits.

President Donald Trump requested from the Department of Homeland Security 20,000 additional law enforcement officers to carry out what he calls the “largest deportation in American history.”

At the end of a proclamation mainly focused on pushing undocumented immigrants to leave the country voluntarily, Trump called upon DHS to begin “deputizing and contracting with state and local law enforcement officers, former federal officers, officers and personnel within other federal agencies, and other individuals,” adding that it shall be done “no later than 60 days after the date of this proclamation.”

It is unclear how his latest push would be funded as Trump and Congressional Republicans look to make large cuts to the federal government’s budget. There are currently about 6,000 officers focused on deportation efforts at Immigration and Custom Enforcement.

Earlier this week, DHS officials said they would pay migrants $1,000 to “self deport” and that their cost of travel would be covered. In his proclamation Friday, Trump repeated that offer and labeled it “project homecoming.”

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PUSHES SELF-DEPORTATION AS IDEAL WAY FOR IMMIGRANTS TO LEAVE US

“This proclamation establishes Project Homecoming, which will present illegal aliens with a choice: either leave the United States voluntarily, with the support and financial assistance of the federal government, or remain and face the consequences,” the proclamation states.

The Trump administration has attempted to execute its mass deportation vision though sweeping raids in major U.S. cities, arresting dozens of international students, and allowing ICE officers additional freedom on where they can enforce immigration law — including places previously considered off-limits like schools and churches.
