Trump attorney ordered to testify in classified documents investigation: Report

AOn Friday, a former President Donald Trump’s attorney was summoned to testify before a grand jury. The grand jury is investigating Trump’s handling and dissemination of classified documents following his departure from the White House.

A source informed CNN that Judge Beryl Howell of the District Court for the District of Columbia ruled Justice Department prosecutors met the criteria for the crime-fraud exemption to be applied for attorney Evan Corcoran when he is called for testimony. The order was sealed.

Corcoran will likely provide additional information to the testimony. He previously testified before the grand jury. Corcoran refused to answer certain questions during his initial appearance because of attorney-client privilege. The exception will apply, so Corcoran’s testimony will touch on the events leading up to the FBI raid at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, Florida, last August. This is something Corcoran declined to discuss in January.

Corcoran allegedly wrote a draft of a statement in June that claimed the former president’s team had conducted an investigation. “diligent search” for classified documents that were not found at the National Archives and Records Administration. Although no classified documents were found in Mar-a-Lago during the FBI raid, dozens of boxes were discovered at the resort in August. Some of these boxes contained classified documents.

Howell’s ruling was one of her last sealed orders. She will be stepping down from her leadership position later in Friday. Corcoran’s testimony should be one of most important in the investigation.

This order follows subpoenas being issued for Trump’s trusted inner circle members and a wider range staff at Mar-a-Lago resort.
