Trump asks for some midterm ads to be focused on his record: Report
President Donald Trump has reportedly instructed his top aides to allocate part of his campaign funds for the 2026 midterm elections, focusing on ads highlighting his accomplishments during his presidency-such as record stock market highs, border security, and increased domestic manufacturing through tariffs-despite his low polling numbers. He directed the team to review his speeches for suitable clips to emphasize these achievements. Most of his $400 million campaign war chest will be used for targeted House and Senate races rather than national ads. Internal polling indicates many voters are unaware of the tax benefits from his previous legislation, prompting him to focus on campaign messaging. Trump’s aides aim to portray Democratic candidates as radical, avoiding making the election solely a referendum on him. Currently, his approval rating remains low, with a significant majority disapproving of his performance.
President Donald Trump has reportedly directed his top aides to earmark some of his campaign war chest for 2026 midterm ads focusing on his achievements in office, a potentially risky strategy given the president’s low polling numbers.
Trump reportedly told the aides to comb through his remarks to find clips of him talking about how, on his watch, the stock market has hit multiple all-time highs, the U.S. southern border has been secured, and how his tariffs are driving an increase in domestic manufacturing.

Senior Trump advisers had previously told the Washington Examiner that their internal polling indicated that most voters were unaware of the potential tax benefits nested within the president’s One Big Beautiful Bill from last summer. That fact was reportedly relayed to the president during a recent Oval Office meeting, prompting Trump to hand down the directive on the new ad campaigns.
The meeting was first reported by the Atlantic. The vast majority of Trump’s $400 million war chest will be devoted to specific House and Senate races, according to people familiar with the matter, rather than nationalizing ads focused on Trump’s record.
James Blair, the president’s top outside political aide, declined to comment on the Atlantic‘s report.

Still, top Trump aides previously told the Washington Examiner that Republicans want to nationalize the midterm conversation by casting all Democratic candidates in the “radical” mold of Texas’s James Talarico and Michigan’s Abdul el Sayed in an effort to avoid making the election a referendum on Trump himself.
