Trump asked for delay in paying E. Jean Carroll millions in damages: Lawyers
Attorneys representing E. Jean Carroll requested a federal judge in New York to order Donald Trump to pay nearly $5 million in damages awarded to her after winning a defamation case in 2023. Trump had been waiting to release the funds while appealing to the Supreme Court, which recently rejected his bid to overturn the verdict. Additionally, Carroll is owed over $779,000 in interest from the damages award.
Carroll has won two lawsuits against Trump related to her sexual abuse claims, with a 2023 jury finding Trump liable for defamation and sexual abuse, awarding her $5 million. Trump denies the allegations and is currently seeking to contest these rulings, asserting he will continue to fight the case despite the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear his appeal.
Attorneys for E. Jean Carroll on Tuesday asked a federal judge in New York to order President Donald Trump to pay nearly $5 million in damages for a defamation case she won in 2023.
Until earlier this month, Trump was waiting to release the money to see whether the Supreme Court would take up his appeal to reconsider the $5 million case. After the Supreme Court on Monday rejected the president’s bid to appeal, Trump’s legal team contacted Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, to ask if she would delay requesting the disbursement of the funds awarded to her by the 2023 jury, according to Kaplan. Kaplan said that the president’s attorney wanted more time so he could ask the court to reconsider its denial.

“Carroll’s undersigned counsel notified Defendant’s counsel that Carroll does not consent,” Kaplan wrote in court filings.
“[A]fter four years of litigation across every level of the federal court system, it is time for this case to end,” she continued. “And under the Court’s Stipulation and Order, Carroll is now entitled to obtain payment of the money due under the judgment.”
In a separate filing Tuesday, Kaplan asked U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the Southern District of New York to accelerate the schedule to disburse $5 million in damages awarded to her. Kaplan requested “that the court direct [Trump] to respond to the motion within seven days, or by July 7, 2026, rather than the usual fourteen days.”
In addition to the $5 million award, Carroll is also due an additional $779,783 in interest, according to court filings posted by Kaplan. “It is time for him to pay Carroll,” the writer’s attorney said.
