Trump and Jean Carroll agree to combine defamation lawsuits into single trial

FTrump is now the subject of two defamation suits. They were filed by E. Jean Carroll, a former columnist for the magazine. He accused her of rape and then sued her after she claimed she lied about it.

Carroll’s attorney sent a Friday letter to U.S. district Judge Lewis Kaplan requesting that the separate defamation lawsuits are consolidated into one. “Because of the overlapping nature of these proceedings, a single trial will reduce costs across the board, avoid the risk of inconsistent factual rulings or jury confusion, and economize matters for the Court (as well as for both parties’ witnesses),” Carroll’s attorney wrote.

The settlement is the latest in years-long legal battle between Carroll and Trump. In 2019, Trump sued Carroll for defamation. He had denied that he had raped Carroll in a New York departmental store in the middle of the 1990s. Carroll filed the suit against Trump after he repeatedly denied the allegations. She described herself as “not my type.”

Carroll filed a second lawsuit after Trump stated in a Truth Social posting that the allegations were false. “hoax and a lie.” Carroll sued the former president of battery as part of the second suit. Trump has strongly denied raping Carroll. Carroll had accused him of assaulting Carroll in a Bergdorf Goodman bathroom after an alleged incident in the mid-1990s. Trump also denied the accusations of defamation and argued that his denial was fair.
