‘Tremendous legacy of peace’: Trump hails Elizabeth following queen’s death

Former President Donald Trump joined the chorus of voices honoring Queen Elizabeth II, hailing her “tremendous legacy of peace and prosperity” while extending his “sincere condolences to the Royal Family.”

Trump recalled his time spent with the queen during his presidency, saying Britain’s longest-reigning monarch presided over a “historic and remarkable reign” while adding that her son, King Charles III, “will prove to be an inspiration to everyone.”

“Melania and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.”Queen Elizabeth’s historic and remarkable reign left a tremendous legacy of peace and prosperity for Great Britain. Her leadership and enduring diplomacy secured and advanced alliances with the United States and countries.”

The queen died at the Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96 on Thursday, ending her 70 years on the throne — the longest of any monarch in U.K. history. During her reign, she oversaw the tenures of 15 prime ministers and outlasted 12 U.S. presidents, including Trump.

“She will always be remembered for her faithfulness to her country and her unwavering devotion to her fellow countrymen and women. Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty’s generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was — there was nobody like her,” he continued.

Following a visit with the queen in 2019 that included a stop at Buckingham Palace, Trump described his encounter with the queen as the most fun the royal had in “25 years.”

Elizabeth was crowned in 1953 when she was 27. She lived through major wars and massive upheaval in the international realm, including the dissolution of much of the British Empire. Her eldest son, who is 73, is now the oldest man to assume the mantle of king in the country’s history.

“Our thoughts and prayers will remain with the great people of the United Kingdom as you honor her most meaningful life and exceptional service to the people. May God bless the Queen, may she reign forever in our hearts, and may God hold her and Prince Philip in abiding care,” Trump added.
