Treasury Turning Over Suspicious Bank Records on Biden Family to House GOP, Comer Says

According to reports, the U.S. Treasury Department agreed to allow Republican lawmakers access to a list of Suspicious Activity Records (SAR) that relate to transactions made by Hunter Biden, President Joe Biden’s younger brother, and their business associates.

James Comer (Republican, Kentucky) is Chairman of House Oversight Committee. He issued today a statement announcing that the Treasury Department would provide the committee with an in camera review of suspicious activity reports regarding members of the Biden family or their business associates. Comer stated that the reports are about “unusual foreign or high-dollar transactions.”

SARs can be records created by financial institutions or banks. They are filed with the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. FinCEN’s guide (pdf), lists several activities that banks can use to generate SARs.

Comer, in a November report (pdf), cited media claims that U.S. banks could have generated more than 150 SARs for Biden family business transactions. After Republicans won control of the House of Representatives, Comer requested formal access to these Treasury records.

Comer issued a subpoena last week, requesting that Jonathan Davidson, Assistant Secretary for Legislative Relations at the Treasury Department, appear for a transcribed interview about the department’s handling Republican requests for SARs for the Biden family. Comer informed Davidson that Davidson’s interview will be postponed after he stated that the Treasury Department had agreed that they would provide access to the SARs.

“After two months of dragging their feet, the Treasury Department is finally providing us access to the suspicious activity reports for the Biden family and their associates’ business transactions,” Comer stated. “It should never have taken us threatening to hold a hearing and conduct a transcribed interview with an official under the penalty of perjury for Treasury to finally accommodate part of our request.”

NTD News reached out for comment to the Treasury Department but did not get a response before the article was published.

Investigations of Biden Family

Republicans have claimed that Biden family members made a profit from Joe Biden’s accessibility, and they were able to enrich themselves by offering investors (including foreign nationals) access to Joe Biden.

SARs is one of many avenues Republican lawmakers have pursued in their investigation into the Biden family business dealings. Republicans have also kept in touch with Biden family business partners and associates, including Eric Schwerin (and Kathy Chung).

On March 12, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, published a letter (pdf) alleging the Republican majority had also issued subpoenas to Bank of America for the financial records of three of Hunter Biden’s associates.

Comer indicated that he has at least some records of business related to the Biden family.

“According to bank documents we’ve already obtained, we know one company owned by a Biden associate received a $3 million wire from a Chinese energy company two months after Joe Biden left the vice presidency,” Comer spoke on Tuesday. “Soon after, hundreds of thousands of dollars in payouts went to members of the Biden family. We are going to continue to use bank documents and suspicious activity reports to follow the money trail to determine the extent of the Biden family’s business schemes, if Joe Biden is compromised by these deals, and if there is a national security threat.”

There have been overlaps between investigations by Republican prosecutors and those of federal prosecutors. Hunter Biden announced in December 2020 that he was being investigated by U.S. Attorney’s Office of Delaware for taxes. According to unnamed sources, the Washington Post reported that prosecutors had enough evidence to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes and lying in a federal form when he purchased a firearm.

Raskin Alleges GOP Blocking Trump Investigation

Raskin accused the Republicans of the House Oversight Committee of stalling investigations into former President Donald Trump.

Raskin claimed Comer in a March 12th letter “… you may have acted in league with attorneys for former President Donald Trump” to stop the committee receiving subpoenaed records of Trump’s accounting company, Mazars USA.” Raskin said those records also pertained to evidence that foreign governments  “… sought to influence the Trump Administration by playing to President Trump’s financial interests …”

“The Committee can’t coordinate with Trump’s lawyers to stop a lawful Subpoena from investigating his evidenced corruption. Instead, they issue an intrusive and broad subpoena based upon an investigation into the business dealings of Trump’s political rival’s child, who has never served any government service.” Raskin wrote.

A spokesperson for the House Oversight Committee denied Raskin’s allegation saying his claim was “It is unfounded and not true.”

“There has been no discussion or coordination with any member of the Committee’s majority about the Mazars documents.” the committee spokesperson told the Epoch Times. “Even Raskin’s letter, which is buried in footnote 5 admits that there’s no evidence to support the accusations against Chairman Comer.”

The committee spokesperson said the point of Raskin’s claims was to “Be proactive” of new developments in the Republican investigation into the Biden family, including documents that “The committee gained a better understanding of many areas of concern, and it opened up new avenues for investigation into the business plans of the Biden family.”
