Todd Young, head of the 2020 GOP Senate campaign, won’t support Trump in 2024 because he always loses.

Sen. Todd Young Breaks with Trump, Will Not Support Third Campaign for White House

Former Chairman of National Republican Senatorial Committee Cites Trump’s Record of Losing Elections

Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) made headlines on Thursday when he announced that he will not support former President Donald Trump’s third campaign for the White House. Young, who was chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee during the 2020 election cycle, cited Trump’s record of losing elections and hurting Republican candidates in other races as the primary reasons for his decision.

“I don’t intend to support him for the Republican nomination,” Young told reporters. “Where do I begin?”

Young, who used to have “a close relationship” with Trump, according to a report from The Washington Times, went on to say that he believes Trump is the “shortest path to losing” for Republicans and that he is “worse equipped” than anyone else to bring people together and advance conservative values.

Why Sen. Young is Breaking with Trump

  • Trump hurts Republican candidates in other races
  • Trump consistently loses elections
  • Trump is not equipped to bring people together and advance conservative values

Young’s decision not to support Trump’s third campaign for the White House comes as no surprise to many political observers, given the former president’s controversial tenure in office and his role in the January 6th Capitol riot. However, Young’s comments are notable because he was once a close ally of Trump and served as chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee during a difficult election cycle for the GOP.

Despite his decision not to support Trump, Young does not believe that the former president will be the nominee, citing the long primary season ahead and the fact that Republicans are in a “winning mood.”

“I don’t think he’ll be the nominee. I’d be really surprised,” Young said. “We know he’s the shortest path to losing, because he’s done it since 2018. He’s brought down the entire party.”

Young’s comments are just the latest sign of the deep divisions within the Republican Party over the future of the party and the role that Trump will play in it. As the 2022 midterms approach and the 2024 presidential race looms, it remains to be seen whether the GOP will continue to embrace Trump or move in a different direction.
