Remembering Tim Keller: A Life Dedicated to Sharing the Love of Christ

On Friday morning, the Christian community mourned the passing of Tim Keller, a prominent Christian author and the longtime pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City. Keller, who founded the church in 1989, served as senior minister for decades before retiring from full-time ministry in 2017. He was a husband, father, and grandfather.

A Life of Humility and Dedication

Redeemer Church announced Keller’s passing in a statement, noting his humility in interactions with both congregants and global ministry leaders. The statement also highlighted his passion for “communicating the profound wonder and transforming power of the gospel of grace.”

“We are forever grateful for his leadership, heart, and dedication to sharing the love of Christ with others,” the statement added. “While we will miss his presence here, we know he is rejoicing with his Savior in heaven.”

A Legacy of Writing and Teaching

Keller was a prolific author, with books such as “The Meaning of Marriage” and “The Reason for God” addressing important theological topics. He also frequently wrote about urban church planting and other practical ministry issues.

Throughout his career, Keller received degrees from Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. He served as a pastor at West Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Hopewell, Virginia, a professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, and director of mercy ministries for the Presbyterian Church in America.

A Life Well-Lived

As news of Keller’s passing spread, fellow ministers and evangelical figures reflected on his life and ministry. Don Carson, emeritus professor at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, praised Keller’s ability to balance intellectual rigor with a deep sense of the presence of God.

“Most people who spent time with Tim thought they were among his best friends,” Carson wrote. “That is a common mark of a well-cared-for church.”

Collin Hansen, editor-in-chief of The Gospel Coalition, remembered Keller as a spiritual father to many in his generation.

“When Tim and I catch up someday in the new heavens and the new earth, I can’t wait to hear all he’s learned,” Hansen wrote. “But for now, Tim’s death leaves a void I can never fill.”

Tim Keller’s life was a testament to his deep love for Jesus Christ and his dedication to sharing that love with others. He will be deeply missed by the Christian community, but his legacy will continue to inspire and encourage for generations to come.
